On The Go Breakfast - Breakfast Smoothie

Dr. Mom's Healthy Tips:

  • Quercetin, a bioflavonoid found in the apple peel, inhibits the inflammatory cascade and neutralizes the damaging effects of pollution in those with asthma and allergies.

  • Blueberries are rich in anthocyanidin, vitamin E, and antioxidants.

  • The phytonutrient anthocyanidin, in combination with vitamin E, promotes healing, decreases inflammation and has been shown to prevent diabetic neuropathy.

  • Antioxidants additionally prevent free radical damage and prevent cardiovascular diseases.

  • Bananas are rich in vitamin B-6, which decreases symptoms of wheezing in asthmatics

A few years ago my daughter decided to run a marathon. While she successfully completed this goal, she was left with an unexpected side effect of her daily training. She developed severe acne as a result of the damaging effects of wind, sun and sweat. After making an attempt at all treatments prescribed to her, including one full year of antibiotics, I decided to intervene. The first step was a change to her diet. In addition to converting her to drinking hormone-free almond milk and ceasing her consumption of animal products for some time, I introduced more antioxidant-rich foods. My daughter does not like fruits and eating multiple servings is especially difficult for her, so every morning instead of breakfast, I began to make her a breakfast smoothie to go. We all heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” as we were growing up, and this is exactly what her blended mixtures of fruit did for her. Her acne has now subsided, and I am sharing this antioxidant-rich recipe with others who may suffer from similar acne problems, asthma, or allergies or who may simply want to start their mornings off with a healthy, sweet treat!

Breakfast Smoothie

  • ¾ cup blueberries

  • ½ large or 1 medium-sized banana (can be replaced or complemented with a variety of fruits for additional vitamins, such as kiwi, oranges, pineapple, etc.)

  • Serve immediately. If not, the nutrients can be lost by the heat of juicing.
