Happy Mother's Day! - Bread Sweet

Dr. Mom's Healthy Tips:

  • Feed the soul and the body!

  • Dairy is a good source of calcium, phosphorus, potassium, protein, riboflavin, vitamins A and B12 and is fortified with vitamin D.

  • Adding cardamom to milk helps with digestion.

Dessert is not my favorite meal, however my husband loves sweets. He always talks about Double Ka Meetha, a popular Hyderabadi sweet. With that in mind, I created this simple dessert. While this is no comparison to the deep fried bread in ghee, it has its own elegance and simplicity.

This dish is so simple, even kids can make it as a special treat for their moms!

Happy Mothers Day!

Bread Sweet

Total Cook Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 8 slices white bread

  • 4 cups milk

  • 1/3 cup sugar

  • 2 cardamom seeds

  • 1 tablespoon butter (maybe less)

  • Optional

  • Dried cranberries, nuts, and ground cinnamon to garnish

Directions:

  1. Add milk to a pot and bring to a rolling boil over high heat.

  2. During this time, prepare the bread slices by toasting and lightly buttering them. Cut off the edges and slice them into triangles.

  3. Arrange the prepared toast in 2 layers in a 8x8 square dish.

  4. Reduce the heat under the milk to medium and add sugar.

  5. Continue boiling until it has reduced to half the original volume (2 cups), 25-30 minutes. Stir milk continuously to prevent it from burning or overflowing.

  6. Crush and add cardamom seeds, and boil for an additional 3-5 minutes. Remove the milk from heat.

  7. Pour the thickened milk evenly over the arranged bread, and garnish with your choice of cranberries, nuts, ground cinnamon, or other toppings.

  8. Cover and refrigerate for a minimum of 3 hours or overnight.

  9. Serve chilled and enjoy!

Optional Extras:

  • I used 2% milk for this recipe, however if you're feeling extra indulgent you can use whole milk.

  • Tips for Little Chefs: Instead of boiling the milk on the stove, you can microwave it in a large microwaveable glass bowl for 30 minutes (be sure to keep an eye on it to prevent spills).
